Tips on picking a wedding DJ
1) Do not pick the hottest club DJ on the scene.
Playing music at a wedding reception requires a different style than playing music at a club. The best DJ in the club may not be as versatile as a professional wedding DJ. A wedding DJ must cater to a crowd of grade school kids, high school kids, college kids, young professionals, aunties, uncles, parents, grandparents, those who grew up around the block and those who grew up and still live 'back home', wherever that may be. As you can see it is very different than a club which usually caters to one segment.
2) Will your DJ dress appropriately?
Make sure you pick a DJ that you have a good feeling about. Someone who will dress to blend in with the guests rather than choose to stand out in jeans, t-shirt and a hat.
3) Will your DJ be drinking?
It is nice to offer your DJ some drinks but it is not so nice when the quality of the service goes down the drain because of a tipsy or drunk DJ. Remember the DJ is there to provide a service and in our opinion should not be drinking on the job.
4) Will the DJ have helpers?
It is always good for the DJ to have a helper. This way the equipment is never left alone without a DJ to control it and the music will continue to run smoothly. You should know how many helpers will be there and make sure they all follow the same rules as the DJ. (Dress appropriately, do not drink and do not mingle with the guests)
5) Does the DJ have a website?
In this day and age anyone can have a website but we do suggest you check out the content of their website and try to get an impression of what that DJ is about.
6) When you meet the DJ, do they ask the right questions?
The DJ should ask not only enough questions but the right questions to get an understanding of exactly how they should be coordinating and planning the music aspect of your wedding. The DJ is not only responsible for music, but important equipment like microphones, lighting, entrance music, first dance music, etc.
